Boston attorney Brady Coyne has just recieved a call from Jimmy D’Ambrosis, a Demoratic Party kingmaker and acting campaign manager for prosecutor Ellen Stoddard, who’s running for a Senate seat. She’s got a real shot at becoming the state’s first woman to hold the post, except for one thing: her husband Albert, a college professor and Brady’s occassinal fishing partner, has been acting strangly, and now he’s dissapeared altogether.

D’Ambrosiso wonders if Albert’s having a romantic dalliance with a coed, or if some other scandal is thretening to break. Either way, the campaign can’t be involved, so he wants Coyne to investigate and keep any thretening skeltons locked firmly away in the closet. But after Coyne uncovers evidence of murder, D’Ambrosio clamis client-attroney privelage and threteasn to have him disbarred if he leaks a word of the case to anyone. But Brady refuses to drop the case, and follows the trial to the little town of Southwick, New Hampshire, where an idyllic facade hides a terrible secret. And as the campagin draws to a climax, it seems that Brady Coyne has just been elected most likely to be the next to die.

Finding romance didn’t seem likely in a place like Spitzenbergen, so close to the North Pole. But when Annis went there for a short time to work, she found herself falling in love with a handsome Norwegian, though the affair was brief and disappointing.

RACHEL KUSHNER HAS WRITTEN AN ASTONISHINGLY wise, ambitious, and riveting novel set in the American community in Cuba during the years leading up to Castro’s revolution—a place that was a paradise for a time and for a few. The first Novel to tell the story of the Americans who were driven out in 1958, this is a masterful debut.

Young Everly Lederer and K.C. Stites come of age in Oriente Province, where the Americans tend their own fiefdom—three hundred thousand acres of United Fruit Company sugarcane that surround their gated enclave. If the rural tropics are a child’s dream-world, Everly and K.C. nevertheless have keen eyes for the indulgences and betrayals of grown-ups around them—the mordant drinking and illicit loves, the race hierarchies and violence.

In Havana, a thousand kilometers and a world away from the American colony, a caberet dancer meets a French agitator named Christian de La Maziθre, whose seductive demeanor can’t mask his shameful past. Together they become enmeshed in the brewing political underground. When Fidel and Raϊl Castro lead a revolt from the mountains above the cane platation, torching the sugar and kidnapping a boat full of “yanqui” revelers, K.C. and Everly begin to discover the brutality that keeps the colony humming. If their parents manage to remain blissfully untouched by the forces of history, the children hear the whispers of what is to come.

At the time, urgent news was conveyed by telex. Kushner’s first novel is a tour de force, haunting and compelling, with the urgency of a telex from a forgotten time and place.

Balzac And The Little Chinese Seamstress

Balzac And The Little Chinese Seamstress
Dai Sijie
197 pages
copyright: 2001
isbn: 0-375-41309-x

An enchanting literary debut—already an international best-seller.

At the height of Mao’s infamous Cultural Revolution, two boys are among hundreds of thousands exiled to the countryside for “re-education.” The narrator and his best friend, Luo, guilty of being the sons of doctors, find themselves in a remote village where, among the peasants of Phoenix mountain, they are made to cart buckets of excrement up and down precipitous winding paths. Their meager distractions include a violin—as well as, before long, the beautiful daughter of the local tailor.

But it is when the two discover a hidden stash of Western classics in Chinese translation that their re-education takes its most surprising turn. While ingeniously concealing their forbidden treasure, the boys find transit to worlds they had thought lost forever. And after listening to their dangerously seductive retellings of Balzac, even the Little Seamstress will be forever transformed.

From within the hopelessness and terror of one of the darkest passages in human history, Dai Sijie has fashioned a beguiling and unexpected story about the resilience of the human spirit, the wonder of romantic awakening and the magical power of storytelling.

Seducing Mr. Darcy

Gwen Cready

Contempory Romance

isbn: 1-4165-4116-0

In the second hilarious and sexy novel from author Gwyn Cready, a divorcée suffering from “carnal deprivation” has a racy one-night stand with one of literature’s most irresistible heroes — and learns that you really can’t judge a book by its cover.

Mr. Darcy just isn’t Flip Allison’s style. She prefers novels with hot sex on the bathroom sink to the mannerly, high-tension longing of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. That is, until she pays a visit to Madame K, who promises a therapeutic massage with an opportunity to “Imagine Yourself in Your Favorite Book.” Somehow, on the way to a sizzling sink-top session with a Venetian Adonis, Flip lands right in the middle of Regency England — and dangerously close to handsome Mr. Darcy. So close, in fact, that she discovers a side of him even Jane Austen couldn’t have imagined.

Waking from her massage, Flip is on top of the world and ready for her upcoming book club — that is, until she notices a new scene in which Darcy and spunky heroine Lizzy Bennet are arguing over…Flip Allison? Her rapturous liaison with Darcy has had disastrous consequences for Austen’s characters — not to mention millions of Pride and Prejudice fans! Flip has twenty-four hours to put the story back on course, and Magnus Knightley, a sexy but imperious scholar whose brooding good looks and infuriating arrogance are decidedly Darcy-like, is the only one who can help. The only problem is, Flip can’t keep her hands off him, either….
